Alcohol and the alarm — the battery and the fire

The alarm is screaming because a fire is burning. A small drink can take the edge off and do little harm — this is about what bigger amounts, and night after night, do to the alarm system. The relief is real: alcohol pulls the brake (it boosts GABA-A). But the brain pushes back — the more it leans on that brake, the harder the alarm and stress hormones rebound when the alcohol clears, and over many nights the baseline itself climbs.

Same fire, different faces. When the alarm is high and the PFC is strained, distress can come out as panic, rage, numbness, shame, or sudden swings.

What’s happening inside
PFCcortisol ▲♥ fast
Brain amygdala fires; PFC can’t keep up.
Body stress chemistry up; sleep harder.
Feels anxious, wired, restless, ashamed.
Terms
PFC
Front-brain context system. Helps pause, think ahead, and tell the alarm, ‘this is not immediate danger.’ Like the adult in the room.
Amygdala
Threat alarm. Scans for danger and can fire before logic catches up. Like a smoke detector that cannot tell toast from a house fire.
GABA-A
Quieting gate. GABA is the calming signal; GABA-A is the receiver that lets that signal slow brain firing. Alcohol opens this gate wider for a while.
Glutamate
Accelerator. Helps the brain wake up and fire. When alcohol wears off, this can rebound and make everything feel louder.
Cortisol / adrenaline
Body alarm chemistry. Raises heart rate, tension, heat, urgency, and the feeling that something is wrong.
What’s happening inside
PFCGABA-A ▲cortisol ▼♥ slow
Brain GABA-A gate opens; PFC dims too.
Body heart and tension ease for a while.
Feels warm, loose, relieved.

Brain GABA-A drops; glutamate & threat rebound.

What’s happening inside
PFCGABA-A ▼cortisol ▲♥ braced
Brain PFC has less energy to regulate.
Body poor sleep leaves the body braced.
Feels panic, anger, dread, numbness, or swings.
Alcohol-fragmented sleep can mean foggier memory, slower reactions, and a flatter mood the next day.

What’s happening inside
PFCrebalancingcortisol ↓♥ steadying
Brain GABA-A & glutamate slowly rebalance; taper prevents dangerous spikes.
Body stabilize first: sleep, food, fluids, medical support.
Feels still raw or restless — but less chaotic, and safer.
Safety: seizures, hallucinations, confusion, double vision, very unsteady legs, or extreme drowsiness need medical help. Don’t stop heavy drinking cold without guidance.

Alcohol pulls the battery from the alarm by boosting GABA-A. The relief is real — but it weakens control, wears off, rebounds, breaks sleep repair, and the fire keeps burning. Recovery means fighting the fire, not removing the battery.
